Rewriting Loss
by Sherry Kappel

The hills and valleys glisten, pristine
Almost as if we never existed
Chairs sitting empty
Our presence hollow footprints

Two thousand twenty, twenty one
Too much of life unsaid undone
We sway in the winds of eternity
Chairs sitting empty

So often we dazzle like effulgent snow
Our corporeality fleeting and yet
A blanket, comfort for those before us
Foundation for those who follow

Our chairs are not so much empty
We’re simply making space
