“You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.”
Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast
Autumn has always been my favourite season. To me it signifies transition, the death before sleep and rebirth. As I get older, Autumn signifies another year passing in a myriad of years going by faster and faster. Its a season tinged with the thankfulness for another year past, but the knowledge that there are fewer ahead. Setting my melancholy aside autumn is a singularly beautiful season because of where I live, geographically speaking. Every year the leaves of the trees become a riot of shades of orange, red, yellow and brown. The air becomes crisp in the morning, catching in your throat. The frost tinges windshields and blades of grass. Winter is coming, but not just yet, and we get that glorious 5th season, Indian Summer. Its a couple of weeks of beautiful weather tucked away between the end September and the end of November, where the days rival the best summer could offer and the nights are full of endless possibilities. I'll leave you with a little Dylan Thomas and please now enjoy a taste of my favourite season, Autumn. As an aside, check out how many were shot on Ektar 100 ;)
“And I rose
In rainy autumn
And walked abroad in a shower of all my days...”
Dylan Thomas, Collected Poems.
My next curation will begin on December 12th. My theme will be planned double / multiple exposures. As always I challenge you to plan, shoot, develop, scan and process your image in the time between now and December 18th, the end of my curation. Have fun!
The week beginning November 21 will be guest curated by Jesús Joglar and the theme is "Lines." Straight, curved, convergent, divergent, continuous, discontinuous, spirals . . .
Show us all kinds of lines and, if they have a special meaning for you, even better! You may submit your photo here.
