HALLOWEEN. ALL HALLOWS' EVE. THE DAY OF THE DEAD.
As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, we kick off the Fall/Winter Holidays with Halloween.
Halloween is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in), celebrated on November 1st. On the eve before Samhain, it was believed that the boundary between the world of the living and the spirit world was so thin that the souls of the dead could roam freely back and forth. To ward off or appease roaming spirits, the Celts would light large bonfires and leave out food and wine as an offering. When leaving their homes, they'd wear masks and dress up in animals skins to masquerade as spirits themselves. Today, animals skins have changed to costumes and Jack-O'-Lanterns replace the bonfires.
However, the tradition remains.
This collection is in celebration of the tradition of Halloween.
It is especially fitting to share film photographs on this day as they are made by the light/energy of the moment carving tones from light to dark onto a negative. A physical and chemical continuity between time past and time present.
What is a photograph but a ghost of time past.
Warm thanks to everyone who submitted and a fun and safe Halloween to you all!
Please join us week. Amy Jasek will be curating and the theme is "Home" - submit your photos, here.
